What: The first annual CIAS and ISSA Security Symposium '07 is designed for security professionals and researchers interested in furthering their understanding of various aspects of computer security. This year's event focuses on Intrusion Detection/Prevention and IP Traceback. Greg Shannon's presentation, "Detecting Botnets via Network Anomalies," will discuss how statistical anomaly detection sensors can be used as increasingly valuable tools for defending critical networks against malicious adversaries, including autonomous software robots (botnets), running malicious programs on compromised machines.
Greg will talk about the use of anomaly-based threat detection to identify botnet command and control communications. He will also discuss the benefits of: -- Taking bots off-line by disrupting botnet command and control transactions
- Infiltrating to identify compromised machines, collecting malware, monitoring illicit activities, attempting to identify the miscreants involved, or any number of other motivators
- Unsupervised parametric anomaly detection (UPAD) and statistical payload analysis (SPA) sensors and their role in detecting targeted attacks such as botnets, worms and data exfiltration.
Who: Dr. Greg Shannon, Chief Scientist, CounterStorm, Inc. For the last 15 years, Shannon has successfully used computer science to solve real problems in network security. As CounterStorm chief scientist, he is the principal investigator for CounterStorm's two Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II awards from The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to commercialize cyber-security technologies in content anomaly detection and cross-domain anomaly correlation. He joined CounterStorm in 2003 after leading engineering and research teams at Ascend, Lucent, Indiana University and startups. He received his PhD from Purdue University and a bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University. His specialties are network security, data mining/analysis and the design/analysis of algorithms.
When: Wednesday, April 4, 2007 Keynote presentation begins at 9:20 a.m. CT
Where: The University of Texas at San Antonio Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security Institute of Texan Cultures 801 South Bowie Street San Antonio, Texas
